Content note
LOST includes depictions of suicidal thoughts, self-harm, panic attacks and grief, and a scene of deliverance prayer. If any of this is close to home, you are not alone. Need to talk?
The story
Haunted by the loss of her best friend, a final-year student has stopped sleeping, stopped praying and stopped letting anyone close, until one friend refuses to give up on her.
Final-year student Joy has not slept properly in months. Since losing her closest friend, Shannon, she is haunted by nightmares in which Shannon's voice accuses her, and by panic attacks she can no longer hide. She has pushed away her friends, her church and God, and her friends have started to give up on her.
Only Gideon refuses to. When he reads her journal and sees how close she is to the edge, he gives her a choice: therapy, or he goes to the school. In the office of Dr Edgar, a therapist who never backs out of a challenge, Joy begins to face the guilt she has carried alone. But as healing begins, Dr Edgar starts to suspect that not every battle begins in the mind.

The whole story
Final-year student Joy is barely surviving. Every night she dreams of her best friend Shannon, who she believes died months ago in a fire at a birthday party, and every night Shannon's voice asks why Joy killed her. Joy blames herself: she begged Shannon to go to the party, then left her there. Having already lost her parents and her sister, she is convinced that everyone who loves her gets hurt.
When Gideon finds her journal and realises she is thinking of ending her life, he refuses to walk away. He pays for therapy and says he will go to the school unless she attends. Joy's first session with Dr Edgar ends with a slammed door, but when Dr Edgar talks her through a panic attack over the phone, something shifts. Slowly Joy returns to her friends, to church and to Gideon, who is falling for her. Their friend Jennifer, who has feelings of her own for Gideon, is not pleased.
When therapy reaches its limit, Dr Edgar's pastor reminds her that some battles are spiritual. In a raw confrontation, Dr Edgar prays over Joy, and Joy is set free from the presence that has tormented her. For the first time she tells the whole story of that night, and hears that it was never her fault.
The friends graduate. Gideon plans a proposal. Then Joy's phone rings. It is Jennifer: "Shannon is alive."
